I'm at Frankfurt airport after a 12 hours flight from Tokyo. (On my way to Helsinki.) It's amazing how much thinking you can get done in a plane if you're not drinking. Long flights have become an essential part of my "catch up on thinking" time.

The other thing- when you don't drink for a while you sleep a lot better and your dreams are a lot more vivid. And this makes you think a lot more clearly in the daytime. Life seems less of a hassle, somehow.
I'm in my hotel room in Helsinki right now... I wish you could order "non-smoking / non-minibar" rooms. ;-)
Joi, I think a lot of people are terrified (perhaps reasonably) of flying and drinking helps them cover this up. I noticed how much I longed for a drink when I flew somewhere recently and it surprised me. I'm not a nervous flyer, but with so many other perqs gone from flying, it felt like one I'd like to indulge in and one that would make flying more fun.
I've often wondered how pleasant it would be if there were an emergency to have to deal with a plane full of drunks -- might be the furthest thing from fun.
most hotels in the US you can specify a non-smoking room. Isn't this true in Helsinki?
And I bet if you asked, they'd remove the mini-bar stuff also. You are the customer, after all!
